Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Paul's writings (the books of Romans to Philemon) is our doctrine and its what we practice in practical application. All other scripture belongs to Israel and is in context to them. However, we can learn spiritual application from other scripture, especially if it agrees with what we practice according to our grace doctrine.
So, in true context, Matthew 6:33 should be understood from Israel's Kingdom program.
During Jesus ministry and the Jewish church in Acts 2-4, as part of Jewish faith demonstration, they had to sell all they had and then gave those proceeds to the apostles for the church as a whole. Doing this demonstrated their faith; that they would have ALL things when the Kingdom came. In the Kingdom (the 1000-year rule of Christ) they would never have lack or want. They would be blessed and be the head and not the tail. They would receive the wealth of the gentile nations, etc. Selling all they had was a small price for what they'd receive when the Kingdom came.
This is what Jesus meant by "seek the kingdom first and ALL these things would be added" to them.
His righteousness in the verse refers to the law. The Jews had to obey the law as part of the works of faith they needed to demonstrate and endure for salvation. The kingdom was their inheritance and motivation.
Today, this verse can also apply to us, but in a different way. We are not Israel. We don't have the promise of an earthly kingdom and physical blessings, but we can receive it spiritually. It is good to seek the things of God, spend time in the Word and be led by the Spirit. We have confidence in all spiritual blessings in heavenly places, but we don't inherit Israel's kingdom promises where all physical things will be added to us. Our inheritance is spiritual.
Matt 6:33 must be understood from Israel's Kingdom program. We seek our blessings in Paul's epistles.
