What are these two mindsets about salvation?
- Those who think they're saved but are not.
- Those who fear they're not saved but are.
Let me explain both views.
People who think they're saved but are not, are those who think that attending church, giving to the poor, living piously, or doing certain "good works" is all that's necessary for salvation. Their mindset is that through their good works they can build up credits with God and enter into heaven because they have earned it. They don't realize that the only way they can be saved is to hear and respond in faith to the gospel of grace; by believing that Jesus Christ died for their sins and rose again for their justification.
Rom.4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
1 Cor.15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
People who fear they're not saved but are, are those who have heard the grace gospel and responded in faith, believing that Jesus Christ died for them and rose again to justify them before God, but are either worried they haven't been good enough to deserve it, or are convinced they've been bad enough to lose it. They don't understand that anyone who responds in faith to God's message of grace receives salvation, no matter what kind of life they've led, and once they have it, there's nothing anyone can do to take it away.
Understand this,
The grace believer's salvation is forever secure, and they are "sealed with the Spirit." (Rom.5:1-2; Rom.8:29-39; Rom.6:8; Eph.1:13-14; Eph.4:30; Phil.1:6; 2 Tim. 1:12).
Eph.1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise,
If a true believer in Christ could lose his salvation, it would mean GOD has rejected His Son's sacrifice for our sins! Jesus was raised from the dead "by the glory of the Father" (Rom 6:4), proving His sacrifice was accepted by the Father… thus we are "accepted IN the beloved" (Eph. 1:6).
Upon our salvation, we are "sealed with the Holy Spirit" unto salvation. Once you are sealed, you cannot be unsealed! God does not want you to doubt your salvation, and there is no reason for you to doubt God. Our salvation by grace does not depend on our performance, good works, or even our faithfulness. The salvation we enjoy today as believers is solely dependent upon what Christ has already done for us at Calvary's cross!
Eph.2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Titus 3:4-7 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
