Who are the Gentiles?

Who are the Gentiles?

The following statement is a reply written by someone who was commenting on a post in which I described the framework of scripture; the dividing of the redemption plan of God into the dispensations. This comment argues that Gentiles are Europeans and do not constitute all people who are not Jews. In the rest of the post, I provide my understanding of who Gentiles are based on a rightly divided view of scripture.

Comment made:

Gentiles are not all nations outside of Israel. Gentiles are the sons of Japheth: Genesis 10:1–5. Trace Japheth's sons as they overspread the earth and you will find that they are merely Europeans, or what the world knows as white people.

Remember Ham was also a son of Noah, but not Gentiles. Shem is the lineage which the nation of Israel comes through.

In Romans 11, Paul, being the apostle of the Gentiles, was speaking to Rome, who are Gentiles warning them not to try to take the church from Israel. Rome, even unto this day says that they are the mother church. Paul states,

Roman 11:11 I say then, have they (Israel) stumbled that they should fall? GOD FORBID: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, FOR TO PROVOKE THEM TO JEALOUSY.

FURTHERMORE, Paul acknowledges that Israel is blinded in part, meaning some see and keep his word and some don't.

Romans 11:25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this this mystery, lest YOU SHOULD BE WISE IN YOUR OWN CONCEIT, THAT BLINDNESS IN PART IS HAPPENED TO ISRAEL UNTIL THE FULNESS OF THE GENTILES BE COME IN.

GENTILES/EUROPEANS ARE RUNNING THIS WORLD, IT IS SELF EVIDENT!! Everywhere in Paul's travel were throughout Europe, but Israel was always in the midst. After the reign of the Gentiles the LORD will come to this earth to set up his kingdom.

My reply:

In regard to your comment, I use the word Gentile in a broader context than what you suggest. I base the word Gentile from the following passage:

1 Cor.10:32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

This verse provides 3-PEOPLE GROUPS which I define as follows,

  1. Jews: are those in the bloodline of Abraham and under the covenant of circumcision. These make up the chosen nation of God, His special people, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation and will inherit the earth and reign as priests and kings over the Gentiles in the Millennial Kingdom. Although Jews and the nation of Israel exist today, God does not deal with them according to the covenants he made with them, since we are in a different dispensation today where God does not reckon them as 'Jews under the covenants'. They are saved today into the grace program which will end at the rapture of the body of Christ before the beginning of the tribulation. Thereafter, the Kingdom dispensation will resume where God again reckons the Jews as distinct and separate from the nations and His covenants are again reactivated over them.

  2. Gentiles: are those who are not in the bloodline of Abraham, and outside of the covenant of circumcision. These are ALL other peoples (or nations) who are not Jews (in point #1). These are (acc. to Eph.2:11–13) Gentiles, (Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision, and were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:) If they do not come to salvation in Christ, they will ultimately be judged at the Great White Throne and cast into the lake of fire. If you maintain that Gentiles are only Europeans from Japheth, then there is no gospel, or means of salvation, offered by God, to cover this extra people group. All those who are then not Jews, neither Gentiles, and are not saved into the Church (#3), are utterly lost and without hope. This predicament does not fit into the redemption program of God.

  3. The Church (the Body of Christ by grace): are ALL peoples, (Jews or Gentiles), saved by Paul’s grace gospel and sealed into the Body of Christ. Once they are saved, they are neither Jew nor Gentile, slave or free, male nor female, but have become one in Christ (Gal.3:28), a new creature, and are destined for a heavenly inheritance and purpose in God’s redemption plan.

I trust this provides you with the context that I see in scripture. When it comes to Gentiles, I do not focus too much on lineage from Noah’s sons, but rather on the fact that anyone who is not a Jew by bloodline from Abraham, is a Gentile.
