We are to keep God's commandments. Why don’t we?

Question:

The truth is that Christians are not to reject the law of God, the ten commandments, but by the Almighty’s Spirit should know how to apply keeping His commands without a religious organization telling them what they must or not must not do! God has said it over and over again. We are to keep His commandments. Why don’t we? Is it because some man or some church organization tells them so? Why is man’s teaching so different that what God commandment???”

Answer:

It is true that no Christians is to reject the 10 commandments. In essence, these are the moral standards that all men should abide by. The world would be a WONDERFUL place if men kept just these 10 commandments. However, the truth is that humans CANNOT keep the law, even if they wanted to. Humans are corrupted by the curse of sin. The book of Romans says that “There are none that are righteous, no not one!(Rom.3:10).

It does not matter if God, the pope, a church, or a government, tells men to keep just the 10 commandments, let alone the myriad of subsequent laws on laws. The point is that men cannot, because their hearts are ravaged by sin.

In addition, the Bible says that when the law came, sin abounded (Rom.5:20). The law gives sin power. Without the law, sin is dead, but when the law is given, sin becomes alive and thrives, (Rom.7:7-11).

This will sound strange, but the law was not given for men to obey. God knew that the men would not be able to keep the 10 commandments. God gave the law to show men that they are incapable of keeping just one law, thus the law pointed to the need of a Saviour. The purpose of the law is to teach men that they need a Redeemer, so the law pointed to Christ, (Gal.3:22-26).

When we believe in Jesus, God justifies us freely, by His grace. This is our ONLY hope! If there was any way that allowed us to become righteous by the law, Christ would not have had to die, (Gal.2:21). Justification is God’s work, not ours. When we are justified, it declares us innocent and righteous before God. This is His judgement. He declares us innocent, because it is not based on our righteousness (which is filthy rags to Him), but Christ’s righteousness imputed to us.

Having received justification by God’s grace through believing in His Son, we are to grow in the knowledge of His Word and have Christ formed within us. The Word says that this is our reasonable service, (Rom.12:1). God expects us, simply by our thankfulness to his kindness, to start to learn His Word and start to exercise godliness by its instruction. Ultimately, this will curb sin in our flesh, but sin in the flesh will only be fully defeated when we get glorified bodies.

The point to your question is that law cannot do anything to stop sin. It actually feeds it! When we get saved and the knowledge of the Word starts to change us, we do not need the law because the fruit of the Spirit will start to increase in our life. There are no laws against the fruit of the Spirit (Gal.5:23). Our lives are to mature to the point that we walk according to Gods Spirit (His Word within us) so that the law becomes irrelevant to us, since law is not needed when we operate in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
